CONMEBOL will implement the pink card at Copa América 2024. The tournament, running from June 20, will feature this new card for specific situations involving head injuries.
The pink card Indicates that a player, suspected of suffering a head injury or concussion, needs to be substituted. The Directorate of Competitions and Operations has approved an additional substitution (sixth or seventh) to prioritize player health.

To make this substitution, coaches must inform the on-field referee or the fourth official, who will then display the pink card.
This substitution is allowed once per team, in addition to the standard five substitutions (or six if there is extra time). The substituted player cannot re-enter the game and will be taken to the dressing room or a medical center if needed.
Furthermore, the team doctor must submit a signed SCAT5 form (concussion evaluation) to the CONMEBOL medical committee within 24 hours after the match.
What Did CONMEBOL Say?
According to a statement from CONMEBOL, the Directorate of Competitions and Operations has announced that “In addition to the five substitutions per team allowed by the regulations, a potential sixth substitution will be available to address player health concerns.
“Specifically, this additional substitution can be made in the event of suspected head trauma or concussion. To implement this, either the main referee or the fourth referee must be informed, and a pink card will be used to signal the substitution.”

The tournament, which starts on June 20, will be held in the United States, with Lionel Messi’s Argentina defending their title. Copa America is the oldest active international football tournament, dating back to 1916 when Uruguay won the inaugural edition.
The 2024 Copa America will kick off on June 20, with the final scheduled for July 14 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, the home venue of Messi’s Major League Soccer team, Inter Miami.
Other Cards
This pink card adds to the traditional red and yellow cards used in soccer. Other special cards include the blue card, which sends off a player for 10 minutes for serious fouls or dissent, and the white card, used in the Portuguese women’s league to reward fair play.
Historically, Spain used a white card similar to the yellow card in 1971. Italian soccer had an orange card for temporary expulsions, and the Andalusian Football Federation introduced a green card to reward fair play.
