Unsurprisingly, the proposal has sparked all kinds of backlash from netizens as well as the Union of European Clubs (UEC).
The company A22 Sports Management has revealed an unexpected Unify League and this change involves a new competition format where up to 96 different teams would participate. Given the number of participants, the organization for this tournament would be made up of four leagues of 32 teams and while the only known clubs that will be taking part are Barcelona and Real Madrid, the number of Spanish clubs has been revealed. A surprising 10 is the number of teams that will be taking part in this innovative competition with the league backed by Real Madrid.
Unify League: Proposed format
Under the A22 Sports Management’s proposed format, the new Unify League features a three-tiered system including four divisions. It starts off with the Union League at the bottom, followed by the Blue League in the secondary level. The top tier of the competition will feature two leagues called the Gold and Star Leagues. Notably, the Union and Blue leagues will each have 32 teams, while the Gold and Star leagues will have 16.
Unify League: Qualification rounds and leagues
Given below is a list of the competition’s qualification rounds and leagues:
Union League:
This league will have over 100 teams from across 55 different European nations competing in a play-off-based system. Following the end of this round, 32 teams will then progress to the next round.
Blue League:
While 14 teams will automatically qualify for the Blue League, another 17 teams will qualify through the play-off route. The most recent winner of the Union League will be the last team to join the others.
Gold League:
Eight teams from the Blue League will directly qualify for the Gold League. Meanwhile, seven more teams will join them through a play-off system alongside the most recent winner of the Blue League. As such, the competition will feature 16 teams in total.
Star League:
The Star League will have 12 teams qualify directly from the Gold League alongside the two most recent winners of the Gold and Star leagues. Meanwhile, two of the other teams will qualify through the play-off system.
Unify League: League Stage and Knockout rounds
The 32 teams in each division will be split across four groups of eight teams each. The eight teams will then face off against each other in a round-robin style format running from September to April. Each of the top two teams from the eight-team leagues will then qualify for the knockout rounds.
The knockout rounds from the Unify League will be similar to most other UEFA and FIFA competitions. However, the main difference will be that the knockout rounds will start from the quarterfinals instead of a round of 16.
Live streaming of the matches will be offered for free but a subscription model will also be there.
