The wealth of Vijay Mallya, the chairman of United Breweries Group and the previous owner of Kingfisher Airlines has significantly decreased. Mallya was charged in a case involving bank loan defaults totalling more than Rs 9,000 crore. Since 2016, he has been living in the UK while battling extradition to India.
Mallya, addressing allegations of financial fraud, acknowledged his fugitive status but contested being labeled a thief, noting banks recovered Rs.1,4131.60 crores against a Rs.6,203 crore debt.
Vijay Mallya has several fancy possessions in spite of his financial troubles. According to media reports, he has three luxury condos, two of which he co-bought with his daughter, and a penthouse in New York’s Trump Plaza that he purchased for $2.4 million in 2010. In addition, he owns the Le Grande Jardin estate in the vicinity of Cannes, France, on the Island of Sainte-Marguerite.
When asked by Raj Shamani what he is doing now, Vijay Mallya said, “I have always had something to do. I haven’t been sitting alone. I told my interests keep me occupied, my pace of life has slowed down dramatically. My pace of life now is probably of semi retirement. But that’s what happens when you reach retirement age. So the frenzy of the past doesn’t last forever. And I am in that phase. I have more than enough interests to keep me occupied.”
As per corporate shareholdings filed for March 31, 2025, Vijay Mallya publicly holds 3 stocks with a net worth of over Rs.4,460.1 crore.

Vijay Mallya’s current net worth
Vijay Mallya grew into the aviation, beverage, and real estate industries after inheriting the chairmanship of United Breweries at the age of 28. In July 2022, The Independent UK reported that his net worth, which Forbes estimated at $750 million in 2013, was approximately $1.2 billion. This purported rise in wealth, however, contrasts sharply with his ongoing legal disputes and Kingfisher Airlines’ collapse.
In February this year, Vijay Mallya who now lives a semi-retired life submitted before the Karnataka High Court that the Rs 6,200 crore debt he owes to banks has been recovered multiple times over and sought a statement of accounts detailing the amounts recovered from him, United Breweries Holdings Limited (UBHL, now in liquidation), and other certificate debtors.
Vijay Mallya’s bankrupcy
Vijay Mallya blames the 2008 global financial crisis for Kingfisher Airlines’ 2012 financial collapse, which was brought on by the airline’s growing debt. After the Supreme Court of India convicted him in a case involving the now-defunct airline of transferring $40 million to his children, his legal issues worsened in 2017. For a 2017 contempt of court case, he was later fined Rs 2,000 (£21) and given a four-month jail sentence.

Even though the Indian government started the extradition process in 2017, the 69-year-old billionaire is still fighting his extradition and continuously denies any wrongdoing. Mallya recently claimed his innocence in an interview with Raj Shamani.
He said, “ You may call me a fugitive for not going to India post March, but I didn’t run away. I flew on a prescheduled visit. Fair enough, I didn’t return for reasons that I consider are valid… so if you want to call me a fugitive, go ahead. But where is the ‘chor’ (thief) coming from? Where is the ‘chori’ (theft)?”
