Who is Joe Burns? 

Joseph Anthony Burns is an Australian cricketer who was born on September 6, 1989, in Herston, Queensland, Australia. The 34-year-old stands 182 cm (6 ft 0 in) tall. 

A look at Joe Burns’ career 

Joe Burns plays cricket for the Australia national team, the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, and Queensland in Australian domestic cricket. 

Burns had a great start to his Sheffield Shield debut in February 2011, scoring 140 against South Australia. Burns was called up to the Australia A team early in 2013 to play against a touring English team as a result of his performances.

Burns’s achievements throughout the 2013 County season between May and August attracted the attention of Leicestershire, who signed him to replace their overseas player, Ramnaresh Sarwan. 

Before the English County Championship in 2019, he joined Lancashire; however, he quit for personal reasons and went back to Australia after only one game. 

Burns signed a contract with Lahore Qalandars in April 2021 to play in the Pakistan Super League matches that were rescheduled.

During a tough season for hitters in general, Burns was averaging 37.16 in the Sheffield Shield after being dropped by Queensland. But now that his Melbourne Stars deal has ended, he is without a professional contract in Australia.

In 23 Test matches, he averaged 36.97 and hit four hundreds. In late 2020, he participated in his last game against India. 

He announced his plan to move to Italy in May 2024 to play cricket for Italy in the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Burns will participate in the subregional qualifiers as part of the route to the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, which he is eligible for due to his mother’s heritage which traces back to Italy. His grandparents were from Italy and moved to Australia.

Joe Burns’ parents were both school teachers. He also had a brother named Dominic Burns who died aged 39 in February 2024 and played cricket in Italy.
