Acting Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Navneet Kumar, who presided over the case, expressed disapproval over the way the case was handled, stating that crimes of any kind committed against foreign nationals could have serious national and international ramifications, including effects on the nation’s tourism industry. A s*xual offence committed against a foreign woman is likely to damage India’s reputation internationally by drawing negative attention to the nation.
The Court observed that several police arrests had already been made and that a First Information Report (FIR) had been filed against seven accused parties concerning the gang rape. The Court also observed that the victim of the incident has already received legal and other assistance from the Jharkhand Legal Services Authority.
The suo motu petition, WP(C) No. 3283 of 2023, was also brought to the Court’s notice. In it, the High Court documented numerous instances of crime against women, and the Police Department was asked to respond. The case is now scheduled for a further hearing on March 7, 2024. Further, the Jharkhand government’s director general of police has been ordered by the court to provide a response in due time.
