Here is all you need to know about the new rule in football and the purpose of the blue card along with its meaning
In a lot of sports, coaches, players, and team officials can be warned, reprimanded, or penalised with penalty cards.
What is the meaning of a Blue Card in football and Sin Bin rules
The most common way for referees or umpires to signal to a player that they have committed a violation is with penalty cards and we are already aware of the Red and Yellow cards being issued in almost every match. Meanwhile, there will be an additional colour introduced in for the football Sin Bin.
What is Blue card?
As part of sin-bin testing, a blue card will be implemented in professional football, which will be the first new card colour to be widely used in fifty years.
In an attempt to distinguish blue cards from yellow or red ones, blue cards have been used this season in grassroots football in Wales. According to reports, the colour was selected over orange due to concerns that people would mix up red and yellow cards.

The Telegraph reports that the International Football Association Board will unveil the ground-breaking step on Friday as part of new regulations that will cause players to be benched for ten minutes if they commit a cynical foul or act disrespectfully towards a match referee.
It may soon come to an end for players to indulge promising attacks or counters with intentional fouls like shirt pulls. Elite contests will be “excluded” from the first round of testing since teething issues could arise.
After protests from Uefa chief Aleksander Ceferin, neither Euro 2024 nor the Champions League the following season will include sin bins. When asked about the Sin Bins and the blue card, he replied to The Telegraph:
It’s not football anymore.”
If the trials are successful, Uefa may be compelled to carry out the disciplinary procedure.
With two blue cards in a game or a combination of a blue and a yellow card, players will now be sent off.
- A blue card + a yellow card = a red card
- 2 blue cards = a red card
