Football gets new ‘Kerch Bridge On Fire’ chant in 2022
Since the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war in February 2022, Kerch Bridge has gained international attention as a key strategic point. But who would have known that it would be as important to football coverage as it is to newspapers?
The “On Fire” chant used by Will Grigg, which rapidly went viral, was created by Wigan fan Sean Kennedy. As DJ Kenno created a whole song based on the chant, its popularity skyrocketed in 2016. When playing professional football, English-born Will Grigg represents Northern Ireland.

Why did Kerch bridge get a football chant?
On October 8, 2022, a substantial portion of the Kerch Bridge, which was deemed to as Russia’s “most protected bridge,” collapsed and caught fire. At least two railway carriages on the bridge were caught on camera being consumed by a raging fire. At the time, Russian authorities asserted that a car bomb was to blame for the initial explosion.
