Police are seeking information following the discovery of the body of Gurashman Singh Bhatia, a 23-year-old student from India, in the Canary Wharf area of east London to determine the cause of death reason of GS Bhatia

Bhatia was reported missing after a night out with friends on Thursday, December 14, and his body was found by police divers in South Quay six days later, on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Metropolitan Police, Bhatia, who was studying in London, was last seen on CCTV in the South Quay area at around 4:20 am on Friday, December 15, following a night out.

His disappearance was reported shortly before 5:50 pm on the same day. A comprehensive Investigation was launched, involving the examination of CCTV footage, interviews with witnesses, and analysis of phone and financial records.

Specialized officers conducted searches in the water around Canary Wharf, leading to the discovery of a man’s body on Wednesday. While formal identification is pending, the police have notified Gurashman’s family, expressing condolences during this challenging time.

Authorities are treating his death as “unexpected” and stated that there is currently no indication of foul play. Nevertheless, they are eager to gather more information to confirm these findings and determine his cause of death.

DCI James Conway, overseeing local policing in the Tower Hamlets area of Canary Wharf, stated that Gurashman’s death is being regarded as unexpected. While there is no indication of foul play, the investigation will be conducted with utmost thoroughness to confirm this.

The police have released a CCTV image of Gurashman taken before his disappearance, urging anyone who may have seen him in the Marsh Wall area on the evening of Thursday, December 14, and in the early hours of Friday, December 15, to come forward with information.

Conway expressed his deep condolences to Gurashman’s family and friends, acknowledging the tragedy as an unfortunate outcome of their missing persons inquiry.

Although formal identification is pending, Gurashman’s family has been notified. Those with information about Gurashman’s movements are encouraged to contact the police at 101, referencing CAD5787/15Dec.

The Indian student community in the UK had initiated widespread social media appeals following the report of Gurashman’s disappearance.

Pursuing an MSc in Digital Finance at Loughborough University, the Sikh student’s case was brought to the attention of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar by BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa after he went missing last week.

23 year old Gurashman Singh Bhatia hailed from Punjab Jalandhar’s Model Town from a very renowned family, GS Bhatia completed his primary and secondary education from Delhi Public School Jalandhar and shifted to London to pursue his postgraduate from Loughborough University and was issued a two-year UK residence permit, which was valid until June 2, 2024.
