“Boots Only Summer” Trend Explained
The “Boots Only Summer” trend is exactly what it sounds like and features people wearing real football boots, complete with the studs, as everyday footwear. The trend started gaining traction after singer Rosalia showed up at the Met Gala wearing a hot pink New Balance football boots with a long white skirt and slogan tee. Since then, the trend has exploded on social media, with TikTok users documenting their boot-clad summer outfits. TikTokers are also using the hashtags #BootsOnlySummer and #BootsOnlySummerChallenge while posting these pictures.
“Boots Only Summer” trend spread and reach
While the trend initially began in East London, it has since gone global, thanks to viral traction on TikTok. The trend has reportedly racked up over 16 million posts, while the associated challenge has even surpassed 23 million posts. Moreover, celebrities like American actor Noah Beck have also jumped in on the trend, wearing silver and neon orange boots.
Concern from football boot brands
While the “Boots Only Summer” trend has gained traction worldwide, football boot manufacturers have raised red flags and concerns over the trend. Manufacturers have warned netizens that wearing football boots on concrete destroys their structural integrity. UnoZero have come out to call the trend a “terrible idea,” explaining that studs are designed for turf or grass, and not hard surfaces. As such, using them on concrete can warp the studs, reduce grip, and even lead to discomfort and blisters.

Interestingly, many designers have created fashion-forward alternatives that mimic the boot aesthetic without sacrificing comfort in the recent past. Martine Rose launched a 2022 collab with Nike to introduce the Shox MR4. The she was a boot-inspired sneaker that the U.S. Women’s National Team wore at the 2023 World Cup. Other similar shoes include the Adidas Speedcats and long-tongue styles like the Grace Wales Bonner Sambas and Adidas Taekwondo shoes.
