The AI PS2 filter reportedly first started as a Midjourney prompt developed to replicate the same videogame graphic aesthetic as the PlayStation 2 console from the early 2000s. A Redditor by the handle @Wear_A_Dam_Helmet first shared the prompt in November 2023.
While sharing the prompt, the user also demonstrated the results through a series of pictures. More recently, in March 2024, an unknown netizen used the same prompt in the freemium application Replicate. The application deployed custom models at scale with a single line of code. The netizen, who goes by the username @hurtabdu1 on TikTok, posted the now-viral slideshow featuring various images of himself under a PS2-styled filter.
