Legendary darts player Michael van Gerwen is dealing with more than simply Luke Littler; he is also having dental issues with fans wanting to know what happened to his teeth

Even people who are not very familiar with the sport will probably recognize the three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen from his participation in his 18th World Championship. His smile is also well-known, but in the past year or two, it has been giving him some trouble.

He had been one of the favourites to win the title at the previous year’s PDC World Championships, a feat that would eventually be accomplished by Luke Humphries, who defeated Luke Littler in the final. However, due to jaw issues, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals, making the tournament ultimately disappointing for the Dutchman.

He lost a 5-3 match to Scott Williams of England, who was subsequently defeated by Humphries.

Mighty Mike’s bite, respiration, and sleep were all impacted by his underbite, a condition in which his upper jaw was smaller than his lower jaw.

The cause of the issue faced by Michael van Gerwen is an unsuccessful 2023 dental procedure to correct an underbite. His jaw had to be fractured in order for the surgery to be performed, but things didn’t go as planned, and he was in pain.

“They’re going to break my upper jaw and lower jaw during an operation, he stated in a statement last year. Place them directly on top of one another. After that, it all comes down to recuperation. Another two years in a brace. Then I’m almost done.”

“My upper jaw, they are going to take it six millimetres forward and my lower jaw they are going to put back just three millimetres. I have a big underbite, a penny bowl, as they call it. That bothers me a lot anyway with eating.

“Even a slice of ham, I cannot even bite properly. And because my upper jaw is too small also you get less oxygen through your nose,” he had said.

Michael van Gerwen’s career

At the age of 13, Van Gerwen started playing darts. At the age of 17, he became the youngest player to win both the 2006 World Masters and the 2007 Masters of Darts, throwing a televised nine-dart finish. Van Gerwen, however, battled for steady success following this initial debut on the darting scene until his breakout year in 2012.

He went from being ranked 38th in the world at the beginning of 2012 to fourth at the beginning of 2013, winning his first major PDC championship at the World Grand Prix and making it to the 2013 World Championship final. Van Gerwen won the PDC World Championship in 2014 at the age of 24, making him the youngest winner at the time.
