The Invictus Games

Prince Harry created The Invictus Games back in 2013, after getting inspiration from watching the Warrior Games in the US. Harry saw firsthand how sports helped wounded veterans in all aspects of their recovery. After getting the inspiration, Prince Harry decided to hold his own international version of the event and called it the Invictus Games.

According to the royal family website, the event is specially meant for “wounded, injured and sick Service personnel”. Harry came up with the name based on the meaning of the word “invictus” which means unconquered.

During its inaugural edition in 2014, Harry gave a speech while announcing the games saying:

I have witnessed first-hand how the power of sport can positively impact the lives of wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women in their journey of recovery.”

“The Invictus Games will focus on what they can achieve post injury and celebrate their fighting spirit, through an inclusive sporting competition that recognises the sacrifice they have made.”

Ever since its first edition in London in 2014, the games have taken place in the US, Canada, Australia, and the Netherlands. Prince Harry created the games with the help of his then-charity, The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, and also with the help of the Ministry of Defense.

On Wednesday, 24 August, royal commentator Omid Scobie shared a tweet about the couple’s confirmation about attending the event. He stated:

A spokesperson confirms that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are ‘delighted to be attending’ the Invictus Games 2023 in Düsseldorf next month. Harry will be there from the start and Meghan will join him later on in the competition. They’ll both be at the closing ceremony.”

However, Harry will attend an awards ceremony on 7 September in the UK before arriving in Germany. The Duke is set to give a speech for the WellChild charity, which coincides with the one-year death anniversary of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II. As such, Harry will need to get permission from Buckingham Palace to stay in one of the royal estate apartments. Meghan on the other hand will fly straight from California to Düsseldorf for the Invictus Games.
