Shamar Joseph is a well-known Guyanese cricketer. He has been in the news because his audacious batting style led to the West Indies’ historic victory at Gabba against Australia.
He was born on 31 August 1999 in Baracara, a small community in East Berbice-Corentyne, Guyana. While not much is known about him, it is known that he grew up in a family of three sisters and five brothers.
Shamar Joseph is currently 24 years old and is a Christian by religion. He is single and unmarried.
He bowled 11.5 overs on the trot vs Australia with his speeds consistently above the 145kph mark, and took 7 for 68 to bowl West Indies to a magical 8-run win, all this in just his second Test match.
His career
Encouraged by Damion Vantull and backed by Romario Shepherd, Shamar Joseph took the risk of pursuing cricket full-time after working as a security guard and in construction. His ascent was rapid, beginning with a memorable Division I cricket debut and continuing into first-class cricket.
During his time with the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the 2023 Champions League, Joseph demonstrated his abilities and helped the club win. He played in the Super50 Cup, the West Indies A tour of South Africa, and List A cricket.
Shamar Joseph achieved a noteworthy achievement in December 2023 when he was selected for the West Indies Test team that traveled to Australia. In addition to scoring 36 runs on his test debut in January 2024, he took five wickets, an uncommon feat. Joseph lost the first bout, but he quickly gained support from the crowd.
On 28th January 2024, Joseph’s brilliance shone again with a second five-wicket haul, instrumental in West Indies’ historic eight-run win against Australia. His outstanding play put an end to the West Indies’ 27-year Australian test success skid.
