Fellow Chelsea teammate Enzo Fernández reportedly posted a video on his Instagram account, showing him and his teammates chanting racist and homophobic slurs about the French team.

The team were celebrating their 1-0 Copa America final win over Colombia on Sunday. Following the incident, Fernández issued an apology, stating that the video did not “reflect my beliefs or my character”.

Wesley Fofana is a French professional footballer who was born on December 17, 2000 in Marseille, France. He mainly plays as a centre-half/back for Chelsea in the Premier League and the French national football team.

Despite not joining any professional youth system until the age of 14, he excelled in his first chance in senior football with Saint-Etienne. Fofana achieved even greater heights after joining Leicester City as he became one of the most exciting young defenders in the Premier League.

Fofana was born in Marseille, Bouches-du-Rhône, France and his father is Ivorian while his mother is French. He is one of six children of the couple and is a Muslim by religion.

Wesley Fofana’s wife Cyrine appeared to have hinted that they are divorcing and had removed Fofana’s surname from her Instagram with the two unfollowing each other.

Club career

Wesley Fofana started his youth career in small clubs around the country, and eventually joined top-flight club Saint-Etienne in 2015. He later had his senior-level breakthrough season during the 2018/19 season. He also signed his first professional contract that summer and helped the club’s Under-19 secure the Coupe Gambardella.

That same season, he made his Ligue 1 debut with the first team during a 3-0 victory over Nice. He eventually made his first start during the team’s last game of the season drawing 1-1 against Angers. Fofana also featured in Saint-Etienne’s senior squad for 2019/20 but had a difficult season coupled with a knee injury.

After missing the opening two months of the campaign he scored his first Ligue 1 goal that season during a 4-1 victory over Nice in December. The young centre-back started Saint-Etienne’s first three games of the 2020/21 season but eventually moved to Leicester City that season.

He quickly adapted to his new surroundings and gained a lot of attention. He instantly became a central player for the Foxes and made 38 appearances for Leicester during his debut campaign. 28 of them came in the Premier League. Fofana won the club’s Young Player of the Season that campaign and notably, helped the Foxes secure a hard fought 1-0 FA Cup final win against the Blues at Wembley.

Despite suffering a broken leg injury ahead of the 2021/22 season, he quickly found his form and featured in every minute for Leicester across all competitions for the rest of the season.  Fofana eventually joined Chelsea on August 31, 2022, on a seven-year contract for a reported initial fee of £70 million.

International career

Fofana received his first call-up to the France senior national team back in March 2023. He featured in the squad for the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying matches against the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland. However, he had to withdraw from the squad following an injury.
