Following his stellar display against Rod Lawler, the reigning world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan bagged a whitewash victory and has qualified for the third-round of 2023 BetVictor Welsh Open, where he will face-off against Ben Mertens.

Despite not playing at his best, Judd Trump defeated Louis Heathcote 4-2 to qualify for the third round and face amateur Daniel Wells. With a 4-1 victory over amateur Ian Martin, Ali Carter maintained his lead of £9,000 over second-placed Allen and is still on track to take home the £150,000 BetVictor Series bonus at the end of this week. With a 4-1 victory over Mitchell Mann, in-form Mark Allen breezed into the third-round. Andy Hicks, who defeated Wu Yize 4-3 by clearing from the final red to nab the winning frame on the final black, will now be Allen’s opponent.

With a convincing 4-3 victory over David Gilbert, Mertens continued his strong run in this event. Mark Selby, who has won the Crucible four times, lost to Robert Milkins 4-2; Milkins is still on a roll after making it to the semi-finals of the most recent BetVictor German Masters. Robbie Williams defeated Joe Perry 4-1 to halt Joe Perry’s championship defense, and BetVictor Scottish Open runner-up Joe O’Connor outclassed Stuart Carrington to emerge victorious by score of 4-0. Thanks to his break of 74, Jak Jones defeated LeClercq 4-2 and joined Daniel Wells as the only other Welshmen still in the game.

2023 Welsh Open: prize money distribution

It is understood that the 2023 Welsh Open champion would get £80,000 from the $427,000 total prize fund. The competition’s runner-up will also receive £35,000, while the losers of each semifinal will each receive £17,500. In the second-round of the 2023 Welsh Open, Mark Selby and David Gilbert were shockingly ousted to return home with reward of £4,500.
