Chanu, who had already won the gold at Gold Coast four years prior, successfully defended her record by squatting 201 kilograms (88kg in snatch and 113kg in clean and jerk).
Following Sanket Sargar’s silver and Gururaj Poojary’s bronze in their individual weightlifting competitions, Chanu’s performances gave India its third medal of the day and all three in weightlifting.

Who Is Saikhom Mirabai Chanu?
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is a star Indian weightlifter who is recently in the news because she has won the gold medal in the women’s 49kg weightlifting final in the ongoing commonwealth games.
She was born on 8 August 1994 in Nongpok Kakching, Imphal East, Manipur, India. She identified herself as a follower of Sanamahism but also stated she worships Hindu deities as well.
Her father’s name is Saikhom Kriti Meitei who was an employee at the public works department and her mother’s name is Saikhom Ongbi Tombi Leima who is a shopkeeper. She has 5 siblings and she is the sixth and youngest child of her parents.
She did her training at Sports Academy in Manipur. Her height is 1.50 m (4 ft 11 in) and her weight is 49 kg (108 lb). Presently, she is 27 years old.
Her Career
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu has won many medals in the Commonwealth Games and the World Championships. Her greatest accomplishment before the 2020 Summer Olympics was winning the gold medal at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim, California.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she took home the silver medal in the Women’s 49 kg division. She received the Padma Shri from the Indian government for her services to the game. Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, a sports honour, was given to her by the Indian government in 2018.
At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu took home the silver medal in the women’s 48 kg weight division. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Gold Coast, she broke the game record on her way to the gold medal.
Since 15th January 2022, she has also been appointed as the Additional Superintendent of Police (sports) in Manipur.
