Indian athlete and weightlifter Harshada Garud created history by clinching gold in Asia Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship which is being held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

She won the gold in 45 kg weight category with a total lift of 157 kg, which includes 69 kg in Snatch and Jerk category.

Know who is Harshada Garud, early life, career and family:

Harshada Garud comes from a remote village called Wadgaon, near Pune, she started lifting the heavyweights at an early age that’s when her father discovered the talent in his daughter. When Harshada was just 13 years old, her father Sharad Garud who works as a pump operator in the village, saw Harshada carrying a 50kg rice sack effortlessly.

It was a sign for Sharad, who himself was a state-level weightlifter in his youth, that Harshada was meant for the big stage – a dream Sharad had to give up due to financial difficulties.

‘‘ The day she lifted that 50kg sack of rice, I pushed her into weightlifting to complete my dream, ʼʼ he told the Indian Express.

‘‘ Thankfully, my daughter hated studies, or else she would have been caught up in books.ʼʼ

After that Sharad enrolled his daughter in a sports academy called Dune Gurukul, Wadgaon. The academy had been run by an acclaimed coach Biharilal Dube since 1980.

After joining the Academy under the coaching of Biharilal Dube, Harshada improved quickly and won gold at Kehlo India Youth Games in 2020 which was followed by a bronze medal at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships.

The gold at Khelo India Youth Games 2020 earned Harshada Garud an invitation to a national camp at Patiala, where she worked hard on her technique to further boost her performances.

In National Championships that were held in 2021, Harshada finished second by lifting a total of 143kg. Harshada Garud continued working hard and raised to 145kg and won a bronze medal in 2022 nationals.

She is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Arts degree at Savitribai Phule, Pune University. Harshada Garud has set her eyes on 2028 Los Angles Olympics.
