Atlanta Hawk’s response to Hawk Tuah girl, Hailey Welch’s invite to Trae Young went viral on the social media

The Atlanta Hawks recently declined an informal endorsement from Hailey Welch, popularly known as the “Hawk Tuah” girl. Though Welch has experienced a meteoric rise on social media, her popularity hasn’t won everyone over. In June, she first caught public attention through a viral video interview during a night out, shared by Tim and Dee TV.

Welch, once a minimum-wage worker at a factory, eventually built a significant presence on social media by creating an Instagram account that attracted a sizable following and media attention. She went on to establish her own company, registering various trademarks and securing agent representation. With her brand growing, she began selling merchandise inspired by her catchphrase and started making paid appearances.

Why Atlanta rejected the proposal of Welch?

At only 21, Welch quickly became a well-known internet figure, and once again made headlines this week after expressing support for the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks and inviting All-Star Trae Young to appear on her podcast. In response to Welch’s video, which has been widely circulated on social media, the Hawks distanced themselves from her endorsement with a short statement from their official X account which said, “we good”.

In the video, Welch enthusiastically proclaimed her support for the Hawks this season, even extending a direct invitation to the team’s star point guard, Trae Young, to be her first NBA guest on her podcast, “Talk Tuah.” Welch’s podcast, amassing over 173,000 subscribers, regularly draws hundreds of thousands of views, with certain episodes even reaching the two-million mark.

Backing the Hawks seems a natural fit for Welch, a Tennessee native with close ties to the South, where the Atlanta team enjoys considerable popularity. She is no stranger to sports endorsements either; earlier this year, she threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Citi Field in a game between the New York Mets and the Oakland Athletics. Her appearance in a classic Mets jersey, personalized with her name and the number 1, was met with enthusiastic applause.
