However, despite his exceptional personal record and the string of trophies he’s gone onto lift with Chelsea in that period, Mendy has found no love on the global stage. The shotstopper has been disregarded at almost every major footballing rewards including the bygone Ballon d’Or 2021 where he lost out on the Yashin Trophy to PSG’ Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Despite having in his kitty a massively better record than the Italian, Mendy failed to find any recognition from French football. The decision left ardent viewers of the sport miffed with many berating the people behind the award for their decision.
Ex-Manchester United player Patrice Evra has now weighed in on the fiasco as well with him throwing his weight behind Mendy. He’s gone onto claim that the Senegalese was only denied of the prestigious award because he was black with Evra also talking about how there was no separate window for AFCON because it took place in Africa.
“Also the goalkeeper what about Edouard Mendy? You know, but of course, African Cup, we are the monkeys so no one respects this competition.
“We are the only competition where you have to leave your club, leave for three weeks and play that cup because in Africa we always have a little space,” Evra wrote on Instagram.
