A coach at Ypsilanti Middle School has been dismissed after a video surfaced online showing Josh Smith attacking a student, Michael Moon from behind

The school district has taken decisive action, and the student’s family has sought legal representation, as the coach may face criminal charges.

For the curious, the Incident occurred last week, on June 4, when the coach was seen using a t-shirt to choke the student, who’s identified as 14-year-old Michael Moon.

Many social media users are questioning why an adult would assault a child in such a manner as they are sharing the clip across social media platforms including X/Twitter and Reddit.

However, as of now, there is no information about why the coach sought such action.

What Did Ypsilanti School Say?

The administration at Ypsilanti Community Schools had similar concerns about the coach’s actions, however, they have terminated the coach, identified as Josh Smith.

During a media briefing earlier, a district spokesperson said “The actions of the employee are unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our district.

“Effective immediately, the employee is no longer working at the school district and is not permitted to enter school property or attend school activities.

“We will continue to implement and enforce policies that protect our students and ensure their well-being.”

Charges Against the Coach Smith

Ypsilanti Prosecutor Eli Savit has authorized one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm by strangulation and one count of assault and battery. As of now, the coach has not been arrested.

What Did the Student’s Family Attorney Reveal?

The student’s family attorney, Jordan Vahdat revealed that they are planning not only to hold the coach accountable but also the middle school. As per the attorney’s statement, the school was already aware of Josh Smith’s behavior.

A statement from the attorney reads, “While Ypsilanti Middle School is attempting to distance itself from this incident by placing all the blame on Mr. Smith, what is particularly troubling is that another school administrator witnessed the assault and failed to intervene.

“We plan to hold Mr. Smith and the school district accountable to the full extent of the law.”
