The FIFA World Cup 2022 is now underway in Qatar. The tournament began on November 20th, with the host Qatar taking on Ecuador on the first day. Despite the home advantage, Equador easily trounced the hosts with a 0-2 score. With this defeat, Qatar becomes the only nation in FIFA World Cup history to lose as the host.
Fans have travelled from all over the world to cheer for their country, and many were dissatisfied with the decision to ban alcohol. The Qatari government has outright prohibited the selling of alcohol in stadiums. The concept of bringing alcohol to football stadiums is not new in European tournaments; but, at the Qatar World Cup, supporters were heard chanting “we want beer!”

At the request of Qatar’s Al Thani royal family, the tournament’s administrators issued a complete ban on the sale of alcohol near stadium locations just two days before the competition got underway. As part of an $83 million agreement with AB InBev, the parent company of Budweiser, beer was initially planned to be distributed in designated locations around stadiums, before and after games. During the game, Ecuador’s supporters broke out in cries of “We want a beer” in outrage.
