Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga claimed an exceptional hat-trick for his side during their showdown with South Africa on Saturday
Although Sri Lanka failed to get past the finishing line when they took on South Africa on Saturday, the country did have something to cheer on as Wanindu Hasaranga became the third bowler to take a T20 World Cup hat-trick.
Hasaranga’s hat-trick was also the second of the ongoing world cup after Ireland’s Curtis Campher had snared one previously. In the last delivery of the 15th over, he picked the wicket of number 3 ranked T20I batsman Aiden Markram before returning in the 18th over to pick the wickets of captain Temba Bavuma in the first ball and Dwaine Pretorius in the next ball.

Unfortunately for Hasaranga though, his electric efforts were not enough to take his side past the finishing line as South Africa sealed a four wicket win with a ball to spare. Hasaranga joined Campher and Brett Lee in the list of the bowlers who have snared a hat-trick in the T20 World Cup.

Hasaranga’s hat-trick also saw him extend Sri Lanka’s sensational record in the world of T20s. His hat-trick became the fifth time a Sri Lankan bowler has taken a hat-trick in the world of T20s with their being 23 hat-tricks till date in the shortest format of the game.
Curtis Campher had previously ended up with four wickets in four balls against Scotland, a performance which saw him become the first hat-trick holder this world cup. He also became the third bowler in the world to take four wickets in four balls after Lasith Malina and Rashid Khan.
