The suspect in the case of a nearly killing a Bronx-man was arrested on Wednesday with the video of 55 year old Vietnamese Bui Van Phu viral

The family of the Bronx man, who was nearly killed by an unprovoked suspect, is hoping for the victim’s recovery.

The suspect is later identified as the 55-year-old, Bui Van Phu.

According to the police and family members statement, the suspect was charged with attempted murder in the vicious assault on longtime local resident Jesus Cortes, as he was leaving a Bronx restaurant after having dinner with relatives.

The 52-year-old Cortes still remained in critical but stable condition in Jacobi Medical Center.
During a media interaction, the emotional younger sister of victim, Veronica Cortes told the Daily News after the arrest of the suspect that, “May God Forgive him, because I wouldn’t.

He did a lot of harm to me and my family, putting us through this”.

The whole incident was caught-on-video last Friday. As per the video, the unsuspecting Cortes was attacked from behind by the total stranger, who had put on a pair of gloves, and had punched the head of the victim with his right-hand before leveling.

Family members of the victim were quite worried when Cortes didn’t return home and eventually tracked him down at a hospital.

As per 50-year-old victim’s sister, Veronica, “That kind of person shouldn’t be out on the street. I felt helplessness and anger and sadness, because that person who did the damage does not know the damage he did to the whole family”.

Who’s Bui Van Phu?

As per reports, Bhi Van Phu lives in the Help USA men’s shelter. His shelter is about 4 blocks from the restaurant where the attack took place.

According to another shelter resident, Van Phu works as a security guard at the restaurant. As per authorities, the suspect was jailed from 1995 to 2001 for a Bronx sexual abuse conviction.

The shelter resident said in a statement that, “I’m surprised, he’s a chill guy. He was doing what he was supposed to do”.

The victim is one of 7 siblings, who lives with his mother and brother. According to the victim’s family, Cortes works in the kitchen at a Brooklyn restaurant.

He also used to work as an architect in his homeland before arriving in New York 28 years ago. He is a well-known neighborhood figure, creating a Mexican cultural nonprofit group with his brother, who’s teaching Mexican folkloric dancing.

According to cops, the incident took place when the victim had just stepped out of Fuego Tipico, a restaurant on E. 188th St. near the Grand Concourse. He was talking with a group of men and women outside the restaurant when he was attacked by Van Phu about 10:45 p.m. on Friday.

According to a police statement, as the victim was laid on the ground the attacker was seen saying something to the group before heading back inside the restaurant and then he fled from the scene.

According to police, these two men had no interaction before the punch and investigators found no indications whatsoever that they knew each other.
