During a heated argument at a Target store in Blue Ash, OH, a white male security guard punched a black woman so hard that she fell to the ground with the video of Zach Cotter and Karen Ivery viral
The video is frightening. The event happened in October, and the Daily Mail was the first to post video from surveillance cameras and body cameras.
Video of Ohio Target security guard Zach Cotter punching Karen Ivery during fight goes viral
Karen Ivery, the woman, was said to have asked the store for money to cover her $1,000 shopping bill. Police say that she compared herself to Rosa Parks and told the store manager that she was “owed this,” meaning that she should get money for slavery. The fight got worse quickly, so security guard Zach Cotter got involved.
Last October (in Target) this shopper filled her cart with just under $1,000 worth of merchandise, asked for the mgr and told him they were reparations. He said no, so instead of paying, she attacked a security guard. It turned out poorly for her when the guard defended himself. pic.twitter.com/P7wsGhvRwE

Cotter tried to calm Ivery down by telling her to either calm down or leave the store. But Ivery didn’t back down. Instead, she ran at him and pushed him into his office. Ivery fell to the ground after Cotter punched her in the face. He then called the cops, who decided that he had acted in self-defense and that Ivery had started the fight.
Outrage over Target security guard’s use of force against woman
People are upset about what happened online, and many are asking if the Target security guard was right to use force. Some people have also said that Target should have done more to calm down the situation and stop it from getting violent.

Ivery was given a ticket for disorderly behaviour and had to spend one day in jail and pay a fine of $110. She told the cops that she wanted to talk about “how money works” and “how it’s been working in our community in a very wrong way.” She also said that she was like the civil rights leader Rosa Parks, who in 1955 refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama.
The incident is the latest example of the ongoing discussion in the United States about slavery reparations and systemic racism. Some people say that reparations are needed to make up for past wrongs, but others say they are unfair and can’t be done.
Target responds to violent incident and promises to prevent future incidents
In a statement, Target said that it was “committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all guests and team members.” The company also said that it had “taken steps to address this incident and prevent it from happening again in the future.”
The event has also brought up the question of how security guards and police officers should use force. When it comes to police violence and the use of too much force, many people have asked for more responsibility and openness.
As the nation continues to struggle with racism and inequality, this is a stark warning of how much work still needs to be done to make society more fair and just. We should all keep speaking out against unfairness and working for a better future for all Americans.
