Amnesty International is calling for the release of Ahoo Daryaei, a university student reportedly arrested after a protest against Iran’s strict Islamic dress code. The organization claims she was “violently arrested” during a demonstration at Tehran’s Islamic Azad University, where she protested the enforcement of compulsory veiling by security officials. In Iran, women are required by law to wear a headscarf in public under the country’s strict Islamic dress code.

Notably, the protest by Iranian student Ahoo Daryaei, who staged a solo demonstration by removing her clothing outside Tehran’s Islamic Azad University to protest alleged harassment by Basij paramilitary members, has sparked widespread support and backlash. The Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA), partly funded by the Iranian government, reported that Ms. Daryaei faced no questioning regarding her choice to wear a hijab.

Who is Ahoo Daryaei?

In a video, the security guards at a branch of Islamic Azad University can be seen detaining Ahou who is a French PhD student. University spokesperson Amir Mahjoob stated on social media platform X, “At the police station, it was discovered that she was suffering from severe mental stress and had a psychological disorder.”

Ahoo Daryaei had been harassed inside Tehran’s prestigious Islamic Azad University by members of the Basij paramilitary force who ripped off her headscarf and clothes, leading to her staging a protest by stripping to her underwear outside the university campus with her location currently unknown.

Captured on video and shared online, age 30 Daryaei’s arrest by plainclothes officers led to protests among Iranian students and a surge of social media solidarity. Local reports indicate she was beaten during her arrest, though this remains unverified. Iran’s Fars news agency covered the incident, blurring Daryaei’s image and criticizing her attire, while a university official later suggested she had mental health issues—a claim disputed by supporters.

Daryaei’s protest follows the still-simmering outrage over Mahsa Amini’s 2022 death in custody, which sparked mass protests against Iran’s dress code and oppressive policies. Amnesty International has called for Daryaei’s release and an investigation into her treatment, with prominent figures like actress Katayoun Riahi and activist Hossein Ronaghi praising her courage and calling for public support.

Following the 2022 death of Mahsa Amini in police custody over hijab violations, widespread protests erupted. However, Iran has continued to uphold strict dress codes for women.
