A few Maharashtra tourists went to the Agra fort in Uttar Pradesh on February 20. SageerBaig was the tour guide they hired. Sageer allegedly made some disparaging remarks regarding Shivaji Maharaj according to them. But according to early records, the conflict was sparked by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and Sageer revealed that Shivaji was imprisoned after Aurangzeb vanquished him and his army.
The tourists allege that the guide misrepresented the history, demeaning Shivaji Maharaj while exalting Aurangzeb and the Mughal invasion. They added that the guide’s information contained offensive statements about the Maratha king.
The incident occurred after an altercation arose when Baig shared historical information, mentioning that Shivaji was once held captive at the fort, a well-documented historical event. Baig’s revelation triggered anger among tourists who retaliated aggressively, forcing him to accept his mistake despite his information being correct.
The Maratha ruler, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his son Sambhaji were held captive by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb at the Diwan-e-Aam of the Agra Fort in 1666 but they managed to escape from the Fort by hiding in a fruit basket. Aurangzeb was alarmed and ordered a frantic search after they disguised themselves as a monk and reached Maharashtra.
Debates about the Maratha Empire and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s narrative have reached a peak, particularly after the release of Chhaava, a historical action movie depicting the life of Shivaji’s elder son Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj who ruled from 1681 to 1689 as the second king of the Maratha Empire.

The irate tourists considered reprimanding Sageer themselves. He was first beaten by the group before being led in front of Shivaji’s statue. Holding Sageer’s ears and pressing his nose to the floor forced him to apologize. Days after the February 25 event, the footage of the incident became viral.
Sageer Beg has clarified the situation in its entirety. He said that he made no offensive remarks regarding Shivaji Maharaj. He was merely interacting with his clients and sharing his background with them. Then there was conflict with the Maharashtra tourists.
According to the Agra local police, if a complaint is filed, they will respond following a thorough inquiry into the situation.
It has frequently been asserted that we are taught incorrect historical facts. That brings us to the next task for historians and archaeologists. The answer is not to wage war on communities. Furthermore, acting independently does not make you correct, nor does it give you the right to take the law into your own hands and beat someone.
