The former defender acknowledged that, although having played professionally for 18 years, this was his first experience with the ailment. “I believe it to be a hamstring injury,” stated Mowbray. Since he was never fast enough, he never suffered from hamstring injuries during his 18 years as a professional. However, when that goal was scored, he must have moved a little too quickly.

The Sunderland boss asserted that with a little treatment, he is sure that he will be okay. Since the treatment room is busy, it is unlikely for him to get physio but that is fine.

Match highlights

Sunderland maintained their chances of making the playoffs after rallying from a 2-0 deficit to draw with Watford in stoppage time at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats had a strong start, but they were stunned when Christian Kabasele soared to the highest point and headed in a corner from Imran Louza.

After another Louza corner, Ryan Porteous was given a clean header to extend the lead, but Luke O’Nien quickly added a goal to give the home team hope. In the sixth minute of stoppage time, Patrick Roberts blasted in an excellent equaliser into the top corner to maintain Sunderland in seventh place and within two points of Millwall with one game remaining.

Can Sunderland still qualify for the playoffs?

When Sunderland fell behind 2-0 midway through the second half, it appeared as though they would finish the game three points behind Millwall and out of reach of Coventry in fifth. Yet with their most recent comeback, they enter the final day of the season still capable of passing both teams with a victory at Preston, whose own top-six hopes were dashed at Sheffield United. They have now amassed 22 points from losing positions this season.

They will need a favour from Middlesbrough, who hosts Coventry the following Sunday while Millwall hosts Blackburn, one of their competitors for the playoffs. Roberts’ outstanding equaliser brought the Black Cats’ unbeaten streak to eight games, but if they fall short at the end of the year, they will be able to refer to a run of just one home victory in their previous eight games at the Stadium of Light.
