With a remark on Instagram, Cristiano Ronaldo sparked controversy following Lionel Messi’s historic eighth Ballon d’Or victory on Monday. The renowned Portuguese striker, who has been in a 15-year fierce rivalry with Messi, seems to have expressed his emotions on social media.
Messi won the Ballon d’Or for a record eighth time.

When Inter Miami co-owner and former England captain David Beckham gave Messi his most recent Ballon d’Or, the crowd at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris gave him a standing ovation. Since leading Argentina to victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar last December, the 36-year-old was already the clear favourite to receive this year’s award.
Messi’s lifelong goal was to win the FIFA World Cup with Argentina, and a lot of football fans believe that by winning that one trophy he had been after for so long, the South American solidified his place as the greatest ever to play the game in history.
Messi on his rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo
While the two superstars steadily wind down their incredible careers, many fans and commentators would contend that Messi has emerged victorious in their competition with Ronaldo.
When asked about his rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi responded that it was an epic competition. He further praised Ronaldo as a really good athlete and said that since they both had a strong competitive streak and a constant desire to outdo everyone and everything, they were able to complement one another.
He remarked on their fierce rivalry as an incredibly lovely time for them and football fans in general. Since it is said that it is simple to go to the top but tough to stay there, what they both have accomplished thus far is very commendable. They were at the top for around fifteen years, and it was really hard. For everyone who loves football, he believes it was a wonderful experience and a wonderful memory, even though it was very difficult to remain at this level.
However, Ronaldo does not seem pleased with Messi’s Ballon d’Or
Just less than a day after Messi’s Ballon d’Or victory, Ronaldo came under fire for a remark he made on Instagram on Tuesday. Ronaldo responded to the disparaging remarks made by Tomas Roncero, the head editor of the Spanish newspaper AS and a Real Madrid fan, by posting a string of laughing emojis.
Per @AlbicelesteTalk, Roncero said: “Hello friends what we knew has happened, they were going to give another Ballon d’Or to Messi. He went to retire in Miami, but he was already looking forward to retiring at PSG to prepare for the World Cup. He won the World Cup—yes, well, but with six penalties. The World Cup was 10 months ago; we’re in November. Messi has eight Ballon d’Ors—well, he should’ve had five; he has the Ballon d’Ors of Iniesta/Xavi, Lewandowski, who won six trophies in one season, and Halaand, who was the top scorer of everything.”
Ronaldo is not that stupid; he is possibly aware of the outrage his Instagram comment will provoke. However, that’s the image it gives off, even if nobody can state with certainty that his comment indicates that he agrees with Roncero’s viewpoint.
