Mitchell Starc, Jhye Richardson and debutant Michael Neser were wrecking havoc in the English ranks after Steve Smith had previously declared the home side’s first innings. Rory Burns was caught at second slip by Smith for just four as Haseeb Hameed fell shortly after for six as he was caught at mid-on to see Neser get his first Test wicket.
Dawid Malan and Joe Root managed to weather the storm before play was wrapped up for the day as the weather regressed. Earlier in the day, Marnus Labuschagne had gone onto slam a first Ashes hundred while Steve Smith fell seven runs short of a hundred on his return to captaincy in test cricket.
Alex Carey added 51 while Starc and Neser added 39 and 35 respectively to add to England’s plight.
