The Australia Cup final between Macarthur FC and Sydney United FC 58 attracted a record 16,461 fans. The scene began during the pre-match greeting when United 58 supporters began showing Nazi salutes and emblems.

It occurred as United, formerly known as Sydney Croatia, released a statement late Sunday night criticizing supporters who booed the pre-match welcome to the country and the national anthem, performed fascist songs, showed emblems affiliated with the far-right movement Ustase, and flashed Hitler salutes on video.

The Ustase was a fascist force that collaborated with the Nazis during World War II and carried out genocide, ethnic cleansing, and war crimes. They also constructed the Jasenovac detention camp, where they murdered Jews, Serbs, Roma, other minority groups, and political opponents.

After some Sydney United 58 supporters began waving Nazi symbols and singing fascist chants, Football Australia began the process of taking disciplinary action for what occurred during the game. The team received a show-cause warning from the FA on Monday outlining the alleged misbehaviour by “a tiny minority of persons” at Commbank Stadium on Saturday night. The notice gave the club until Friday to provide an explanation for the governing body to take into consideration.

In response to what occurred on Sunday, Sydney United FC issued a statement expressing zero tolerance

The board of Sydney United 58 FC issued a statement saying, “Sydney United 58 FC has zero tolerance towards any type of disrespect, racism, or discrimination and is working together with authorities to undertake a comprehensive investigation.”
