During the FA Cup final, Liverpool supporters booed the national anthem.
It resulted in a public spat between the government and Jurgen Klopp.
Klopp, 54, has stated that Reds fans “wouldn’t do it if there was no cause.”

Midway through the first half, a number of fans in the Southampton end were heard singing the hymn, before the Liverpool away end retaliated with a chorus of ‘f*** the Tories.’

Kloop Defended Livepool Fans
It comes after Downing Street slammed Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s defence of fans who booed the National Anthem and Prince William during Saturday’s FA Cup final.
Booing resonated across Wembley Stadium when Prince William, the FA’s president, was introduced to Chelsea and Liverpool players before of their cup final showdown on Saturday.
Fans also drowned out singer-songwriter RAYE’s performance of ‘God Save The Queen,’ as well as the hymn ‘Abide With Me,’ a long-standing FA Cup final tradition.
In a pre-match press conference on Monday, Klopp defended supporters who had jeered the hymn. ‘They wouldn’t do it if there was no cause,’ stated the Liverpool manager.
Prime-Minister’s Office Condemned This
When questioned if Klopp was correct to imply Liverpool had a justification to boo the national anthem, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s official spokeswoman said “no.”
The custom of booing the National Anthem is not new among Liverpool fans, and it is considered to have started in the 1980s as a protest against Thatcher’s Conservative Government and what they saw as the city’s “managed decline.”
The scorn of Reds supporters for the establishment was also a result of the cover-ups in the Hillsborough catastrophe, in which 97 people were tragically died in a crowd at the stadium in Sheffield during an FA Cup semi-final match in 1989.
FA Cup Final Controversy
When asked about the anthem jeering, Klopp described the club’s supporters as “great.”
“Of course, I have ideas, but I think in these cases it’s important to inquire why it happens,’ he remarked on Monday. ‘They wouldn’t do anything unless there was a cause.’ I haven’t been here long enough to understand why – it’s almost certainly historical – and they are probably things you can answer much better than I could.”
The weekend outburst by thousands of supporters was condemned across the political spectrum.
