Son Heung-min of Tottenham was racially abused by a Crystal Palace fan during their Premier League match on May 7th with the video now viral
Video footage of the incident has been shared on social media, and both Tottenham and Crystal Palace have made comments condemning the behaviour and promising to take action.
The South Korean footballer was put in Tottenham’s starting 11 for the match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Son Heung Min played 89 minutes of his team’s win before walking past the travelling Crystal Palace fans to make room for Arnaut Danjuma. As he walked around the pitch to the bench, he seemed to be racially abused by a Palace fan.

Sonny has had to put up with this sort of hideous nonsense too many times in this country. Chelsea acted decisively when it happened at Stamford Bridge earlier this season, I hope Palace (and Spurs) do here too. pic.twitter.com/aYCCXZBftw

Shocking video of the moment has been shared on social media, and Tottenham has made a statement about it. The statement says, “We are aware of a claim that Heung-Min Son was treated badly because of his race during yesterday’s match.
“Discrimination of any kind is horrible and has no place in society, our game, or at our Club. We are working with the Met Police and Crystal Palace to investigate and find the person responsible.”

Crystal Palace has also made a comment about the incident. The statement says, “We are aware of a video circulating online (as well as reports made directly to us) regarding an individual in the away end at Spurs yesterday, appearing to make racist gestures towards Heung-Min Son. Evidence has been shared with the police, and when he is identified, he will face a club ban. We will not tolerate such behavior in our club.”
Son Heung Min has been called racist names before during a Premier League game. Earlier this season, Chelsea fans yelled racist things at him during a match at Stamford Bridge. After that happened, Chelsea said in a statement that the club will take the “strongest action possible” against anyone who is found guilty of racial abuse.
The incident has caused a lot of anger on social media, with many people showing their support for Son and calling for action to stop racism in sports. The Premier League has also released a statement condemning the incident, saying, “There is no place for racism in football. The Premier League and our clubs are committed to promoting equality and diversity in football and in wider society.”
Tottenham is working with the Metropolitan Police to find the person responsible, and Crystal Palace has promised to ban the fan once they are found. The event shows how important it is to take strong action against racism in football and to make sure that all players and fans feel safe and welcome.
