While the festival of Onam is believed to reflect on harmony and togetherness, visuals from Bengaluru didn’t match the festival spirit. After demolishing a Pookalam, a flower arrangement made by the local kids to mark Onam, a Bengaluru apartment complex tenant named Simi Nair is receiving criticism.

According to numerous social media posts, the woman’s name is Simi Nair. A video of the Onam incident shows Simi Nair fighting with locals and demolishing the Pookalam made by kids. The woman can be heard speaking in both Malayalam and English in the 2:20 minute video. It’s still unclear exactly what led up to this incident.

She first got into a verbal altercation with other tenants because they were showcasing the Onam Pooklam in the lobby rather than in someone’s private apartment. Later, she took things too far and began trampling on the artwork in an attempt to ruin it. She stamped and walked on the enormous rangoli with her shoes, showing no respect or hesitation for the celebrations or the work that went into making it.

An important component of the Onam celebration, the Pookalam represents happiness and harmony. A post on X (formerly Twitter) claims that kids in the complex painstakingly put it together as a part of the joyous festivities.

Reactions from netizens

The comment “She didn’t learn from Bharat’s culture that our neighbourhood is our family” was made by a user in response to the video.

Many people are urging the apartment association to take official action, and some have even suggested that the woman should be reported to the police for her actions. The event has sparked conversations about the importance of consideration and respect in residential communities on social media.

“What a vicious and hateful woman,” X user Mini said.

Sushma Iyengar, a resident of Bengaluru, recently criticized fast e-commerce site BigBasket on social media platform X (previously Twitter) for sending free flowers along with her groceries order during the Onam festival. Iyengar questioned why flowers were included in her order as a free gift from the company.

Her post went viral fast and sparked an intense internet discussion. Some even questioned how someone could find it objectionable to getting free flowers.
