Sam Kerr was the winner for Australia on the day as the Matildas downed Great Britain 4-3 in a seven goal thriller at the Tokyo Olympics owing to her two goals
Friday was a dream day for football aficionados. The Tokyo Olympics women quarter-finals regaled us in a string of electric encounters on the day with goals galore and euphoria unabated at the games.
From the cracker of a contest between USA and Netherlands to the seven goal ripper between Great Britain and Australia, we couldn’t have asked for more today. Both the clashes offered unbridled excitement with the finest of margins seeing USWNT and the Matildas making it through to the semi-finals.
For Australia, it was Sam Kerr who turned out to be the hero on the day. Her two goals ended up playing the decisive role in the showdown to take Australia to their first ever semi-final at the Olympics.

Trailing 2-1, Australia looked set to exit the land of the marquee games. However, Sam Kerr had different plans as she scored with just one minute left in normal time to restore parity on the night and take the fixture into extra-time.

Bolstered by that strike, Australia showcased immense fight and character to take the contest from thereon. Australian goalkeeper Teagan Micah saved a penalty in the first half of extra-time before Mary Fowler went onto give the Australians the lead.

Sam Kerr doubled the side’s advantage in the second half as she scored a powerful header, one which was enough to take her side through to the semi-finals despite an Ellen White hattrick. White managed to pull one back after Kerr’s one goal but her efforts were futile as Australia hung on to pull off a notable win.
