With a spin and crash in Turn 2 just past halfway in the Indianapolis 500, Romain Grosjean brought out the third caution of the day. Grosjean, competing in his first Indy 500, lost control of the car on Lap 106, much like Rinus VeeKay and Callum Ilott before him. Before his accident, the Frenchman had been running in the top ten for the majority of the race.

He was able to climb out of the car without assistance and was checked and released from the hospital.

Despite his smashed car, the rookie said he felt physically well enough to return to the race after leaving the medical centre. He started the race in ninth place.

He stated that he had no idea what had happened to his car in the crash and that he would have to go back and look at the data on the car.

“I just want to finish the race,” he said. “I’m not pleased with the day, but it’s been an interesting experience.”

On his Indy 500 debut, Grosjean intended to play the long game.

Romain Grosjean, a former Formula One driver, says he will try to be patient in his first Indianapolis 500.

This weekend’s 106th running of the Indy 500 will be only the third oval IndyCar race for the 36-year-old IndyCar sophomore, who scored 10 podium finishes in F1 before switching to IndyCar. Last year, he made his oval debut at Gateway’s 1.25-mile World Wide Technology Raceway, and in March, he raced at Texas Motor Speedway.

Despite several brushes with the Speedway’s walls during practise, Grosjean qualified ninth, on the outside of the third row of this 3 x 3 grid, the only Andretti Autosport-Honda driver to make the Top 20.

When asked by Motorsport.com if he had a specific strategy for the race’s start, he replied, “No.” I need to go watch previous starts’ videos. If you can stay flat and get six positions, being on the outside is fantastic! If you stuff it in Turn 1, you’ve done a quarter-mile and missed 199.75. So it’s best to avoid it!

“So it’s just patience, playing the long game, and making sure I do things the right way.”
