United needed to win by a two-goal margin, which they could not achieve, and will now have to compete in the Europa League two-legged play-offs. Eric Tan Hag’s club will now face either Juventus, Ajax, or Barcelona, who have been eliminated from the Champions League. Both United and Sociedad finished the group stage with 15 points, however, due to the goal differences, Sociedad got their direct qualifications for the round of 16 games.
The choice by Eric Tan Hag to plan his next move in order to score another goal surprised United supporters. In the 82nd minute, Captain Maguire replaced Fred, and Garnacho and Christian Eriksen were added as replacements. Up until the 95th minute, Harry Maguire was visible playing up with Ronaldo and Rashford in the striker position as United urgently attempted to get their No. 5 on crosses and long balls.
For United to advance to the UEL Round of 16 they will need to play the two-legged playoff round
United will play a two-legged match against a team that has been relegated from the Champions League after being in second place behind Sociedad in the Europa League knockout stage. With the knockout round draw taking place on Monday, Manchester United may now have to face teams like Ajax, Barcelona, and Juventus.
