Pascal Wehrlein, a former Formula One champion, was hospitalised following a horrific Formula E practice accident with his crash video viral
Pascal Wehrlein was taken to the hospital following a frightening collision.
After colliding in Hyderabad’s Free Practice 1 session, championship-leading TAG Heuer Porsche driver Pascal Wehrlein went to a nearby hospital for precautionary examinations.
Early in the 30-minute practice, the German driver made heavy contact with the barriers at Turn 18 after communicating over the radio that his 99X Electric’s throttle had become stuck. Wehrlein’s car skidded out of control and slammed into the wall with a thunderous crash. The high-speed collision severely damaged the front end of his GEN3 car, and bits of it were also scattered across the street circuit.

The car sustained significant damage as a result of the terrible crash, which also caused analysts Karun Chandhok and Jack Nicholls to gasp aloud. FP1 was red-flagged, and marshals were on the scene immediately. Wehrlein was also given permission to get out of his Porsche and head back to the pits for medical checkups.
Porsche decided to shut down all vehicles using their powertrain, including Avalanche Andretti, for the remainder of Free Practice 1 because they are still unaware of what caused the incident and Wehrlein’s car was left stranded at the side of the track until the session was ended.
More about Wehrlein
The former Formula 1 driver now competes for Porsche in Formula E. Wehrlein, 28, had the lead going into the weekend after the season’s first three races. The Formula E driver competed in the Formula 1 events in 2016 and 2017 for Manor and Sauber. He participated in 40 races and scored six points.
What was the reason behind the accident?
Wehrlein, who thankfully escaped the crash unharmed, radioed his crew to explain that the collision was caused by his car’s throttle becoming stuck. He was transported to the hospital for precautionary examinations even though he was able to depart his car on his own without assistance.
Chandhok analysed the circumstances of the collision and concluded that the accident did not appear like a driver error. He claimed it was evident that the throttle became stuck since the wheels were still spinning while he was rotating.
