MANCHESTER ISLAND Officials from the TT have acknowledged that a case of “mistaken identity” resulted in the wrong rider being declared dead after a crash during the festival last weekend as the Olivier Lavorel accident took place
Olivier Lavorel perished after a crash at Ago’s Leap within the first round of the racecar race on the Mountains Course on Saturday, according to the organizers.

Cesar Chanal, the driver, is also said to have escaped and was in a critical state in the hospital. But now they’ve issued a statement admitting they mixed up the two and declared the wrong man dead. They have now verified Chanal died at the scene, while passenger Lavorel is still being treated in the hospital.
“An initial set of minimum standards was undertaken using standard procedures and appears to have resulted in an erroneous identification,” according to the shocking statement. “Cesar Chanal, we believe, perished at the spot of the collision on Saturday, June 4th. Olivier is still in serious condition and is undergoing treatment.
“The families of both Lavorel and Chanal have indeed been told of the tragic news, according to the statement. A thorough examination of the processes connected to the identifying of participants will take conducted in due course according to the organizers.”
The event was crimson for the day after the horrific incident, which occurred just under a mile from the starting blocks, and all races were canceled. Lavorel and Chanal were racing for the first time at the Isle of Man TT contest. However, the duo has raced in the French F1 and F2 National Sidecar Championships, where they have placed on the podium multiple times.
During the contentious festival, two more racers perished. Mark Purslow, a Welsh cyclist, died in a practice crash last week.
