One of the athletes who was most ardently awaited from the Indian contingent for the Tokyo Olympics was javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra. Touted as one of the country’s best medal bets, Neeraj’s innate sprawling skill set was envisaged to add to India’s medal tally.

Stepping out for the qualification round this morning, Neeraj showed why he’s considered such a stalwart. He ended up throwing at a gargantuan 86.65m distance, a throw which not only saw him qualify for the final on Thursday but saw him end up in first place.

With the throw, Neeraj not only ended up ahead of Johannes Vetter who came second but also became the first India to ever qualify for the final of the event at the games.
