After Belgium lost the game, football supporters were shown breaking storefront windows, torching automobiles, hurling pyrotechnics, and setting fire to moving vehicles in the video. To control the situation, the police had to employ water cannons and tear gas. A dozen persons were detained by Belgian police as a result of the rioting that broke out in different locations across the capital city.
Speaking on the situation, the mayor of Brussels, Phillip Close, asked the public to avoid the city’s centre and emphasised that officials were making every effort to maintain order on the streets. Police orders had to be issued in order to stop even the subway and tram traffic. They are rioters, not supporters. There are Moroccan fans celebrating,” Close remarked. Additionally, there were commotions in the cities of Liege and Antwerp. Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden described the episode as “sad to watch how a few individuals misuse a situation to go wild.”
The neighbouring nation of the Netherlands was also hit by the rioting
A mob of 500 football supporters attacked police with fireworks and broken glass, according to police in the neighbouring Netherlands, who reported violence broke out in the port city of Rotterdam. Unrest was reported in The Hague and Amsterdam’s capital by the media.
Belgium is one of the favourites to lift the 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy, however, the loss to Morocco has limited their chances of advancing to the last 16. Belgium will now face Croatia in their last game of the group stage on December 1, 2022. It will be a must-win game for the red devils to advance to the last 16.
