Video footage of Leeds United fans being subjected to pepper spray by Merseyside Police has gone viral

This has far from been the ideal season for Leeds United. Reeling under the brunt of injuries, the side has made for a dreary and laggard unit, one which was schooled by Everton when it went to Goodison Park at the weekend.

However, the clash wasn’t only a woeful affair for the side but the team’s visiting fans as well who were pepper sprayed at by the Merseyside Police. Video of the incident which has since gone viral on social media platforms, one which took place in the second half with the authorities justifying its use owing to the unruly behaviour of the supporters.

As statement by the Merseyside Police read, “At around 4.05 pm at the start of the second half, it was reported a steward had been headbutted by a man in the away section on the Lower Bullens stand. Officers attended and while attempting to detain the male, other members of the crowd began to throw bottles at officers and two officers were punched to the face. When police were assaulted, officers deployed PAVA spray in order to bring the situation under control for the safety of fans near to the disturbance.

Everton meanwhile finally managed to claw their way out of the rut they found themselves in with the club securing a much needed win under the tutelage of Frank Lampard.
