Louis Tyrone Williams (born October 27, 1986) is a professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association for the Atlanta Hawks (NBA). The Philadelphia 76ers selected him with the 45th overall choice in the 2005 NBA draught right out of high school. He has won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award three times. He has played the most career games off the bench, surpassing Dell Curry’s record in February 2022. He is the NBA’s career leader in points off the bench as of March 2019.

Williams had his fewest minutes and points per game since the 2006-07 season, averaging just 6.3 points and 14.3 minutes per game while also averaging 1.9 assists and 1.6 rebounds. At his older age, it was evident that Williams couldn’t get as much space on his trademark elbow pull up jumpers. Similarly, while he has always been able to draw fouls and get to the free-throw line, he had the worst free throw rate of his career —.244 free throw attempts per field goal attempt.

However, at least to start the season, head coach Nate McMillan plainly preferred Williams’ calm senior leadership on the floor alongside Trae Young as a point guard.

Williams joined the Philadelphia 76ers as a somewhat unknown second-round pick in 2005, as part of the last draught class with the option to move from high school to the pros at the age of 18. Williams’ odds of staying in the NBA for more than a couple of years as a second-round pick are slim, but here we are at the end of his 17th season.

He settled into a role as a combination guard and a microwave scorer off the bench along the way. Williams is best known as a sixth man specialist, having earned three Sixth Man of the Year Awards with the Toronto Raptors, the first in 2015 and the latest two in 2018 and 2019.
