After eliminating Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo from the World Cup quarterfinals, Morocco became the first African team to advance to the semifinals. Youssef En-Nesyri scored the only goal in a thrilling 1-0 victory at Al Thumama, keeping Portugal out of the playoffs for the first time in 16 years.
Morocco, who had substitute Walid Cheddira dismissed late in the game, advanced to Wednesday’s semifinal against either France or England at Al-Bayt Stadium, where they will once more be cheered on by the ferocious crowd that helped them defeat Portugal.
Even an early Sub of CR7 was not enough for Portugal.
