Six Red Cards Shown In Dramatic 50-Man Brawl At The Zenit vs Spartak

Following a large brawl in extra time at the conclusion of the 90 minutes, Zenit St. Petersburg’s Russia Cup match versus Spartak Moscow turned into mayhem and six players were dismissed. Both teams appeared to have agreed to let penalties decide the draw after the game was evenly matched at 0-0.

Few would have anticipated their teammates’ reaction as nearly every member of the staff, both playing and not, piled in for a mass brawl on the field as Spartak took a deep free kick from inside their half. Forward Quincy Promes and midfielder Wilmar Barrios collided shoulders and appeared to exchange a few words. However, there may be some humour in watching the referee rush after players as he issued red cards one after another. Such images are an undesirable diversion from the game at hand.

Rodrigao Prado, the number 55 for Zenit, ran in and decided to kick his opponents as the referee was standing just a few metres away, escalating the initial confrontation. Amazingly, despite his involvement in the game, he avoided receiving a red card.

The referee lost all control of the game at this point, which was understandable, and the players all flocked to the field to attempt to catch a glimpse of the action. The level of explosion on the field was such that both substitute benches and a number of coaching staff members all decided to get involved. That fact, together with the fact that former Barcelona player Malcom was among the six players from each side to receive a red card, three from each team, speaks volumes.

Aleksandr Sobolev, Shamar Nicholson, and Aleksandr Selikhov for the visiting team, as well as Wilmar Barrios and Rodrigo of Zenit, were the other players shown the red card. The on-site referee earned his match fee on that particular day for correctly identifying players participating in the riot, much alone the difficult task of reestablishing order on the field.

The majority of people decided to pile into bodies on the ground, while some did the right thing and tried to drag people beneath the players’ boots. A player appears to be about to be stomped on several occasions. It is obvious that there are other parties involved as well. Members of the coaching staff appear to have enjoyed some of the fighting as well, and one man wearing a suit and lanyard—signatures of significance at a football game, if there ever was one, threw several punches after becoming caught up.
