The horse Buick was riding, Blue Trail, galloped away without Buick in the first race on Derby day, preventing the eventual runner-up from almost certainly winning. The craziest scenes occurred in the 2.00, when Approachability, who was seated next to Buick in the stalls, reached across.

The horse retracted his neck and slammed his head into Buick’s with full force. The jockey was wearing his helmet, but the tremendous crash knocked him out cold.
It happened just as the stalls were opening, so Buick grabbed the stall’s edge, still reeling.
Blue Trail and Approachability, Buick’s horses, took off, but the Godolphin-retained rider was left behind at the start.
“I’ve never seen anything like that,” stated legendary American rider Steve Cauthen on ITV. Wow.
With the whole force of his neck, he reared up – a horse’s head is solid. That’s the equivalent of a knockout blow.
On 25-1 Grenoble, Marquand was a quick finisher, and on 7-1 Swilcan Bridge, he was closing all the time.
However, only strides from the finish line, Blue Trail cut in front of Grenoble, delaying his quick finish.
Swilcan Bridge, led by Hayley Turner, stayed clear of the turmoil and just escaped by the thinnest of margins.
Turner expressed his delight by saying: “We were simply following the loose horse, which could have gone either left or right. I have to be quite cautious. He actually gave me a good lead and something to chase up to the finish line.
A “really terrible mistake” caused William Buick’s horse to race without him when a rival runner in the adjacent stall smacked him in the head.
In the 1m2f handicap that opened off the afternoon, the championship-chasing rider was on board Blue Trail, who is attempting a second Derby victory on Nations Pride.
When Approachability reared up in the next-door stall, he was smacked in the head, and Buick appeared to be still reeling from the impact when the starter let the field go.
