When Denmark and Finland squared off in their Euro 2020 opener on Saturday, no one had envisaged the set of events which unravelled in Copenhagen.

Running to collect the ball from his compatriot as Denmark won a throw-in, Christian Eriksen looked set to receive the ball with ease with no one around him. However, what transpired left the football fraternity flummoxed and flabbergasted with Eriksen collapsing to the ground as the ball touched his knee.

No time was spared in bringing the play to a halt with referee Anthony Taylor and everyone on the pitch releasing the severity of the situation at hand. And with Eriksen motionless till the medical team rushed to provide help to him, everyone around the global stage grew increasingly fraught.

While there’s been no update on what lead to Eriksen collapsing to the ground, its clear that things are still extremely fragile.

After receiving treatment for 10 minutes on the pitch, Eriksen was stretched off. And everyone was accorded with breathing space as news came in from UEFA that Eriksen was consciousness and had been stabilised as he received treatment in the hospital.

A Reuters photographer at the encounter saw Eriksen raise his hand as he was carried from the pitch on a stretcher with Fabrizio Romano also asserting that Eriksen was conscious.

While there’s been no update on what lead to Eriksen collapsing to the ground, its clear that things are still extremely fragile. Denmark’s players were seen distraught and dismayed as Eriksen collapsed with many of them breaking down into players.

The matchup between Denmark and Finland has since been brought to a halt with UEFA set to provide a further update in the upcoming time. Meanwhile supporters refused to leave the stadium with both sets of faithful supporters bursting into chants of Christian Eriksen to show their solidarity with the Inter Milan midfielder.

Calls of over exertion has risen since with Asmir Begovic taking to Twitter to slam the concerned authorities. The goal-keeper was quick to berate the burden player are being asked to carry at the moment owing to the string of matches coming in at a hectic rate.
