In men’s cricket, former Sri Lankan skipper Lasith Malinga took a double hat-trick in the ODI World Cup 2007 against South Africa.
Up until now, Malinga was the only bowler to take a double hat-trick in any cricket World Cup event.
Rwanda’s Henriette Ishimwe takes a double hat-trick
It all happened in in the 18th over when Adel Zimunu got run out. Rwanda skipper Gisele Ishimwe handed over the ball to Henriette who capitalized on the pressure. The video of her hattrick can be viewed here.
Henriette first took the wicket of Kudzai Chigora, and then trapped Olinder Chare for a golden duck. Following which, Tailenders Chipo Moyo and Faith Ndlalambi all got out for golden ducks as well.
Impressively, Henriette conceded just 13 runs in the first three overs. Moreover, no Zimbabwe batter managed to score with a 100% strike rate as they all played too many dot balls.
Interestingly, this was not the first that a bowler took a double hat-trick in women’s cricket. Back in 2020, Germany’s bowler of Indian-origin, Anuradha Doddaballapur took a double hat-trick against Austria.
Rwanda bats first
Earlier in the game, Rwanda were put to bat first after Zimbabwe skipper Kelis Ndhlovu won the toss. The opening partnership totaled 49 runs from 10.4 overs. Rwanda’s opener, Merveille Uwase scored a total of 18 runs from 33 deliveries. Meanwhile, Rwanda’s other opener Cynthia Tuyizere got run out after scoring 30 runs from 44 deliveries.
Their skipper Gisele managed to raise the scoring rate in the middle overs by scoring 34 runs from 23 deliveries. Rwanda ended up losing five wickets for just six runs during the slog overs, while three wickets fell in the final over. Henriette on the other hand wasn’t able to do much damage with the bat. She ended up going out after just scoring four runs from 10 deliveries during the final over.
Rwanda’s first win
The win against Zimbabwe is Rwanda’s first win of the tournament. Rwanda are currently placed in Group B with Zimbabwe, which also includes England and Pakistan.
Rwanda lost their first game to Pakistan by eight wickets after scoring just106/8. Pakistan managed to easily chase down the score with 13 balls to spare.
