Gremio fans went on a rampage as they lost their marbles and destroyed the VAR system during their side’s defeat to Palmeiras
When VAR was first conceptualized, it was envisaged to finally eradicate the many refereeing errors which had riddled the sport. However, with referees largely in charge of the technology, little has changed over time with us continuing to be regaled in the same abysmal bits of officiating.
Gremio vs Palmeiras Sees Mayhem As Fans Break VAR Equipment
VAR has been despised across the global stage, so much so that fans in Brazil decided to take things into their own hands. Irked by VAR and livid by their team’s performance, supporters of Serie A side Gremio ended up storming the pitch during their side’s 3-1 defeat to Palmeiras.

The fans were seething at a decision which had ruled their side’s goal offside, one which saw them destroy the VAR equipment on the pitch. VAR ended up canceling what would have been a late leveler for the club which is currently placed 19th in the points tally.
Ensuing the goal being ruled as offside, Palmeiras went onto score a third in added time to take home the three points, a result which left Gremio in the trenches of the points tally.
The 19th placed side is set to face sanctions for its inability to keep its fans under control during the showdown. A slew of fans were also captured fighting in the stands as things quickly turned ugly and went onto off control on the day.
Gremio could face a fine of $23,400 if found guilty along with having to play their next 10 home fixtures behind closed doors.
