Spotted taking the knee during rehearsals for his performance, Eminem was implored to not pull off the gesture during the halftime show which saw Dr. Dre spend $7 million and see Snoop Dogg, Dre, Mary J Blige and 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar and others perform at the SoFi stadium. However, the rapper was unmoved with him seen kneeling and putting his head in his hands at the the end of his performance, a gesture which has since been alluded as paying tribute to Colin Kaepernick.
Colin had first taken the knee in the NFL to protest against police brutality against Black Americans with him asking for racial equality. While Eminem hasn’t opened up on the reason for taking the knee, a gesture which became symbolic of the BLM movement, it is said he did it to throw his weight behind Colin.
The NFL meanwhile had lyrics of Dr. Dre’s Still D.R.E and Kendrick Lamar’s Alright both censored to remove lyrics talking about the police with the league not wanting the Super Bowl to become a culture war moment.
Kendrick Lamar’s lyrics, “We hate po-po / Wanna kill us dead in the street for sure” were removed from his performance.
