Watch: Dejected Cristiano Ronaldo Gets Emotional After Belgium Defeat Portugal In Euro 2020

Cristiano Ronaldo got emotional after Belgium eliminated Portugal in the crucial last-16 fixture of EURO 2020

Ronaldo was heartbroken and disappointed with his team’s performance as Portugal were not able to convert their 24 attempts on goal, where Belgium on the other hand created 6 chances and got the winning goal.

Defending champions Portugal survived the group of death by finishing second above Germany and got a fairly easy draw against Belgium. They failed to contain the fast attacking powers of the Belgium team who were stronger on paper.

But a match is not won on paper, it’s the team who has the most determination that will triumph. Belgium were calm and composed in the match where on the other hand, defending champion Portugal were a bit relaxed.

Portugal’s exit heartbreaking for Emotional Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo fans were heartbroken as they saw their favourite player kicking his captain’s armband in the dressing room in disgust. 36-year-old led his team to the Euro 2016 glory where he was injured in the final match of the tournament.

Portugal fans may need to come to terms as the number of age is catching up to their captain and this will surely be his last appearance in the EURO for his country. Ronaldo was in sublime scoring form and was expected to become the leading international goal-scorer.

Portugal vs Belgium match report: Thorgan Hazard Named Man of the Match

Coming into this crucial last-16 fixture of the EURO 2020, Belgium had a perfect record in the group stage winning all their matches and conceding only one goal. Portugal on the other hand faced many ups and downs in the group of death.

The match began with a slow pace with both the teams testing the waters in the opening stages. Both the defences were difficult to break down, especially Belgium’s who were playing with three centre-backs.

Eden and Thorgan Hazard were running circles around the Portuguese defence who were not able to get a tight grip on that right side of the defence. Thorgan Hazard’s transition from defence to attack was so smooth throughout the game.

A 42nd-minute screamer from Thorgan Hazard swirled into the net of Rui Patricio who was helpless diving across the goal but not able to get anything on the ball. Belgium protected their lead firmly throughout the game not allowing Portugal to score an equalizer.

Portugal tried everything in search of that equalizing goal hitting the woodwork twice in 24 attempts. Maybe their exit from the tournament was a repercussion of not getting any penalty in this match which Ronaldo is so fond of scoring.

Belgium advance to the Quarter-final of the EURO 2020 and will face Italy at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.
